Summer is the season when everyone wants to be outside, and that makes it a lovely time for a mini session. Long days, soft evening light and lots of green around us. If you have been thinking about a short, relaxed shoot in nature, here is a quick guide to help you get the most out of it.

Why a mini session works so well in summer

A mini session is short and simple, which is exactly what most families need in the busy summer months. Kids are on holiday, plans change quickly, and nobody wants to spend half the day on photos. A shorter shoot keeps energy high, and little ones usually stay happy from start to finish. You get a small set of beautiful images without the pressure of a long session.

Timing is everything

In summer the sun can be really strong in the middle of the day. It creates harsh shadows and makes everyone squint. That is why I usually suggest the early morning or the evening, when the light is warm and gentle. Evening sessions are especially nice, as the golden light makes skin look soft and the whole scene feels calm. Of course, with Northern Irish weather we always keep an eye on the forecast and stay flexible.

What to wear and bring

Light, breathable clothes work best for summer. Soft colours and natural fabrics look lovely against green fields, trees and grass. Try to avoid big logos or very bright neon shades, as they can pull attention away from your faces. Bring water, a few snacks for the kids, and maybe a blanket if you would like some cosy sitting shots. If there is grass or a field, comfortable shoes are a good idea too.

Keep it relaxed

The best summer photos happen when everyone is having fun. Running through the grass, a little game of chase, a cuddle on the blanket. You do not need to pose perfectly. I will guide you gently, and the rest comes naturally. Think of it as a short family walk where I happen to bring my camera.
